Children's poem written by UC professor Neil Armstrong

Pretend that Neil Armstrong was writing the typical assignment for the first-day back to primary school: "What I Did on My Summer Vacation." Although the first man to walk on the moon was an engineering professor at the University of Cincinnati when he wrote this, he had a great sense for how to relate to children. Those who read it must have smiled.

(First-man-on-the-moon and former UC professor Neil Armstrong died Aug. 25, 2012, at 82 years of age.)

My Vacation

by Neil Armstrong

Nine Summers ago, I went for a visit.
To see if the moon was green cheese.
When we arrived, people on earth asked: “Is it?”
We answered: “No cheese, no bees, no trees.”

There were rocks and hills and a remarkable view
Of the beautiful earth that you know.
It’s a nice place to visit, and I’m certain that you
Will enjoy it when you get to go.
