Tangeman University Center after hours

At one time, campus had a reputation for resembling a ghost town after dark. But these days, the Tangeman University Center entices both students and faculty to stay on campus to enjoy an upscale restaurant, a 200-seat movie theater with $2 ticket prices, nationally known performers in the 800-seat Great Hall, a food court, study lounges, plus games, entertainment, food and drinks at the Catskeller pub, open until midnight on Fridays. In addition, the building is open 24 hours a day during finals week to accommodate last-minute cramming.

When TUC was renovated in 2004, its original four-column façade from the 1930s was preserved, and its iconic clock tower was placed atop a glass roof that covers a nine-story atrium inside. As part of the building’s expansion, other exterior walls were clad in zinc.

The College-Conservatory of Music’s 17-piece Jazz Ensemble played at the campus pub, the Catskeller, during the winter, followed by an open jam session for all jazz musicians. A free jazz night occurs every Tuesday at TUC, featuring musical styles ranging from swing and bebop to fusion and avant-garde. In an adjacent room, students play pool, shuffleboard and arcade games.

Mick & Mack’s Café has a monthly wine tasting, featuring a selection of wine and hors d’oeuvres. Located directly across from the UC Bookstore in TUC, the campus restaurant offers a sophisticated menu ranging from apple walnut chicken salad to Cajun pasta.

On Feb. 5, the Red, Black, Green and Gold Ball was held in TUC’s Great Hall to end Kuamka (Swahili for “in the beginning”) Week. The Kujifunza ceremony (pictured here) recognizes academic achievements of African-American students as an encouragement for them to obtain the highest levels of academic success.
