Bearcats Top Purdue in OT Thriller
Caupain's Heroics Send UC to Third Round of 2015 NCAA Tournament
by John Bach
The Bearcats advanced to the third round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after a stunning 66-65 overtime win against Purdue March 19, 2015.
UC outscored the Boilermakers 10-3 to close out the game, including a last-second layup to tie it at the end of regulation by sophomore Troy Caupain.
“They never gave in,” said associate head coach Larry Davis. “When it looked like it was over, they just didn’t give in. When you’ve got a team full of guys like that, you’ve got a chance.”
Davis said the players surprised him in the locker room by dousing him with water to celebrate the victory — shortly before he called head coach Mick Cronin, who watched the game from his Louisville hotel. Cronin was diagnosed with an arterial dissection in December and hasn’t coached since.
“We wouldn’t be where we are without Coach Cronin,” Davis said. “He has built this program.”
