To bring educational opportunities to disadvantaged youth in Guatemala, six UC alumni helped deliver first-ever books and visit computer centers in poor, rural schools during February 2012. The UC group joined 25 volunteers from across North America to work through Cooperative for Education (CoEd).

UC alumni on the trip included Carol Fencl, Kevin Dees (’07), Jerry Johnson, Loreda Johnson, Janet Schneider and Alice Schneider (pictured left to right). Personal interaction with students and families enabled participants to experience Guatemalan life and culture within the communities CoEd serves.

CoEd Snapshot Tours take place twice a year and are open to anyone who wants to help Guatemalan school children break the cycle of poverty through education. In 16 years of existence, the Cincinnati-based CoEd has established 184 textbook programs, 52 computer centers, 27 schools with the Culture of Reading Program and 578 one-year scholarships.
