Herman Schneider certainly left his mark on the University of Cincinnati, as well as the world, with the invention of cooperative education. In 2006, the University of Cincinnati will formally recognize the contributions of the former College of Engineering dean and university president with the groundbreaking of the Herman Schneider Memorial Garden.
Co-op memorial garden planned
The garden, a 15,000-square-foot park, will be located along UC's MainStreet between McMicken Hall, the Joseph Steger Student Life Building and Swift Hall.
The steady stream of co-op students who meet their professors in the Division of Professional Practice in the Steger buildings will find themselves traversing through the tiered park of green space and granite. Featured in the garden will be a timeline of cooperative education as well as a timeline of its founder. The space will also include engravings of the inductees to and charter sponsors of the Co-op Hall of Honor.
UC to host global conference
To further commemorate co-op's global beginning, UC will host the Cooperative Education and Internship Association (CEIA) conference April 23-25. More than 500 educators and co-op employers from around the world are scheduled to attend. The annual gathering serves as a forum for focused communication about reality learning within the academic world, and this year's is themed "Defining the Next Century."
"We are excited to bring everyone to our campus to showcase what is going on," says Anita Todd, a faculty member in UC's Division of Professional Practice. Todd is also vice president for marketing and membership for CEIA. "We were thrilled the association was willing to come here for the centennial."
The host hotel is the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, but many of the special events will bring international educators to where it all began.
Highlights include:
- A virtual tour of UC's Herman Schneider Memorial Garden
- The inaugural induction ceremony for the UC Co-op Hall of Honor
- A fashion show by design co-ops from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
- An exhibit, titled the Evolution of Cooperative Education, by UC graphic design students
UC and the National Commission for Cooperative Education will also host a corporate symposium on June 20, 2006, bringing more than 200 employers to campus for the final co-op centennial event.
