NEXT LIVES HERE
By Neville Pinto, President, University of Cincinnati
What an exciting juncture this is. We are ready to kick off our 200th anniversary this October at Homecoming, and we have just embarked on UC’s new strategic direction, Next Lives Here.
This is a moment like no other, with our past, present and future all converging into a tremendous opportunity.
A time for inspiration, ambition and impact. A juncture where we stand on the shoulders of the many Bearcats who preceded us.
It was their grit, tenacity and boldness that made possible what UC has grown to become today. Just months from now, we will join a small and elite group of public institutions that have reached this historic milestone. We will take our place as the nation’s 18th-oldest public institution.
As we embrace this moment, we owe it to our bold Bearcat predecessors to build on their accomplishments and pave the way to a bright and thriving future.
There’s a saying that “the future is not something we enter. The future is something we create.” And that is the point behind our strategic direction,Next Lives Here.
Next Lives Here is more than a strategic direction. It’s a mindset. Next Lives Here means that we believe in testing new approaches and trying the unconventional. Seeking the new and the next is something that is always a part of UC.
And the result is a nimble and adaptable framework that will give us flexibility to achieve our priorities and identify new ones over the next 10 years.
What do we expect Next Lives Here to do? It will position the University of Cincinnati to lead urban public universities into a new era of innovation and impact.
Its platforms are threefold:
1. Academic Excellence — because that will always be our bedrock as an institution of higher education.
2. Urban Impact — because our university is urban based. We will always reach out to the community, both locally and globally, to work together on real-world learning, problem-based research and scholarship, and partnerships to solve the world’s many challenges.
3. Innovation Agenda — because innovation fuels the creation of the future. That includes inclusive excellence and the future of co-op. Our 1819 Innovation Hub will become the destination for Next Lives Here thinking.
We stand at the unique intersection of our past, present and future. This is a moment to seize. This is an opportunity for us to create the future at the University of Cincinnati.
And as we begin UC’s next century, we will show everyone around the globe that NEXT truly does live here at the University of Cincinnati.
